text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Beethoven was struggling with finding a suitable theme for the last movement of his 1st Symphony. He had written the first movement's music and was working on the other movements that would lead towards his finale.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">But this last music still stubbornly eluded him.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">He toiled for some considerable time, trying out but always discarding many melodies, rhythms and harmonies.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Then, whilst reflecting upon the music in front of him (which was that of the first movement), two questions suddenly occurred to him:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What if the first movement was really where he had been trying to get to all along? What if the first movement was really the culmination of his symphony's musical journey rather than the start?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Now, seeing the first movement as the finale, the final destination towards which he was travelling, Beethoven discarded the rest of the music he had written for the symphony and began to write new music: music that poured onto the page and flowed satisfyingly towards a final climax.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">By putting first things last, Beethoven unblocked his thinking, released his creativity and created his first symphonic masterpiece.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What would happen if you put a first thing last?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">That first task of the day: what tasks would you do before it if you made it the last task of the day? How might doing this affect your efficiency and effectiveness?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">That part of the solution you completed first: what could come before it? How would this change the nature and effectiveness of the overall solution?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">That person you meet first: who would you meet beforehand if you met him or her last? How might this affect your relationships with people? How might this change your understanding of people?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">That place you visit first: what places would you visit beforehand if you went there last? How might this change your perception of the people you meet and your understanding of the things that you see?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">That first chapter of a book or first paragraph of a chapter: how would the narrative change if the chapter was put at the end of the book or the paragraph was put at the end of the chapter? What new insights and ideas might emerge?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tasmin Little recently performed <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Max Bruch's <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1st Violin Concerto<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">for the 100th time. The Concert was broadcast, and during the interval Tasmin spoke of her feelings about performing the same piece so many times.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">She spoke of how her performance of the concerto had gained depth over the years, benefiting from an ever-widening palette of approaches that was made possible by the insights gained from working with many different orchestras and the ideas and suggestions provided by many different conductors.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tasmin spoke about one conductor in particular: <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Vernon Handley;<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> he had felt that she habitually played a specific note slightly flat (or just that little bit too low) during the slow 2nd movement of the concerto.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tasmin had listened to this small piece of feedback and placed it in her memory. She said she always recalled his words and was careful to "brighten" the note in question whenever she performed the concerto.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Significantly improving quality, enhancing expertise and skills, breaking through to new and innovative thinking: these things are usually the synergist sum total of many micro-moments of insightful feedback. One bit builds upon another bit that illuminates another bit until everything brightens: transformed into something better than before.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Passively interacting involves listening to the music in the background and appreciating the overall ambience that is created for you.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Actively interacting involves listening carefully to the music and analysing the detail that is revealed to you.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Emotionally interacting involves listening to the music and experiencing the feelings that are encouraged within you.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Communally interacting involves playing the music so that, through your performance of his music, the composer can directly share some of his feelings and sensations with you.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Adopt and adapt the above ways of interacting to both enhance your understanding of problems and improve the effectiveness of your solutions.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Interact with a problem or its solution passively. Place it in the background of your day-to-day work and activity, and allow time for its overall look, feel, shape and impact to soak into your mind. Help this process along a little by sketching a <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Mind Map<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> of the key characteristics of the problem or solution, putting it on a wall nearby and reflecting upon it between tasks.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Interact with a problem or its solution actively. Place it in the foreground of your day-to-day work and activity. Give yourself time to analyse its details and how they combine to contribute to its overall look, feel, shape and impact. Help this process along by using tools such as Forcefield Analysis and Ishikawa Diagrams to analyse the problem or solution.
Directors valued the way he made the atmosphere of a scene, particularly the feelings and tensions filling the silences within a scene, tangible.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As part of his preparation for writing a film score, Takemitsu would visit a film's location, walk around the sets, handle the props and mingle with the actors. He did this to "breath in the atmosphere" of the film and begin appreciating the director's intentions as they slowly manifested within the film's space and time.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">His approach to creating film scores was highly effective: he wrote over ninety film scores and won numerous film music awards. He was particularly good at bringing out the atmosphere, tensions and emotions pervading a silent or quiet scene without adding a single note of music to it. Instead, he would write music immediately before and after the scene that would serve to highlight (through dramatic offsetting) the quality of a silence or quietness.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Takemitsu did the above because of his belief in the Japanese concept of Ma: the belief that the space between and around things is an emptiness full of possibilities, be this appreciating the silent breeze between trees, or reflecting upon the feelings, tensions, unspoken intentions and conflicts swirling within and around events.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">For Takemitsu, creating film scores was about focusing upon the Ma of a scene (a scene's invisible atmosphere) and giving its possibilities a form that could be heard and appreciated. He did not seek to create something that, from his point of view, did not exist within the Ma of the scene: he sought to define what was unseen and unheard but possibly present.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">Given the above, it is not surprising that Takemitsu's services as a film composer were much sought after by film directors.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">The concept of Ma, the idea that the space between things is an emptiness full of possibilities, influenced not only Takemitsu's film music but also his many other works. As you listen to his music, you sense that its silence is at least as significant as its sound: sounds emerge from silence and seep and creep back into it; bright climaxes cast light upon following silence, revealing what is moving within it.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">And the concept of Ma influenced not only Takemitu's music but also his overall approach to life. When one reads his and others' descriptions of his life and experiences, it becomes clear that perceiving space as full of possibilities encouraged Takemitsu to do the following:

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Collaborate rather than work individually. By working closely with others, he increased his ability to sense and define the Ma (the unspoken thoughts and unseen feelings and intentions) surrounding his collaborators' words and actions.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Seek to define what was unseen within a situation or space (e.g., the feel of a situation or the feelings permeating the space between and around a group of people) rather than fill a situation or space with his own preconceptions and ideas. By doing this, Takemitsu increased his ability to gain interesting and surprising insights both from his surroundings and from the people with whom he mixed and associated.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Wait for and then encourage something to emerge rather than force something to take a shape. By waiting for and noticing what might emerge and coaxing it into a recognisable form, Takemitsu again increased his ability to gain insights that others might miss. He also enhanced his ability to collaborate by giving himself the time to recognise and appreciate the emotions, understandings, assumptions, tensions and conflicts, etc., implicit within situations and between individuals.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Appreciate and accept the things he discovered (e.g., traditional music, local customs and practices, others' ideas and opinions, etc.) for what they were, on their own terms, rather than assimilate them into his existing thinking and approaches. By doing this, Takemitsu gained the ability to notice the entire nature of things: to see aspects essential to their uniqueness (e.g., their significance at a specific moment in time to people from a specific culture) that would otherwise be overlaid and obscured by his own experiences, expertise and preferences. This helped him internalise the often ephemeral, almost invisible, uniqueness of things and consequently perceive and adopt new ways of thinking and doing; he avoided merely integrating readily tangible and functional components of things (e.g., techniques, styles and forms) into his existing ways of thinking and doing.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Dialogue rather than debate. By seeking to explore and understand differing perspectives and ideas and holding them beside each other in his mind, Takemitsu allowed them to shed new light on each other: new light that revealed new shades of insight within the space between them; he had gained the ability to combine insights and form new and novel understandings and meanings.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Be like Takemitsu: collaborate with others and explore the feelings and intentions, etc., that surround words and actions; seek to define what is present but unseen within a situation; wait for and encourage things to emerge; appreciate and accept the things you discover for what they are, on their own terms; dialogue rather than debate.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">To achieve this perspective, part of his preparation is to become a game's character, try out the available outfits, tools and weapons, etc., and wander through a game's various scenes and levels.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">Crucially, Roget does not become a protagonist: he does not become part of the action. This slight distancing ensures he is not distracted by the excitement of taking part and trying to succeed but instead focuses upon the look and feel of a game's world and characters.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">By inhabiting a character and experiencing its world but not taking part in a game's narrative, I think Roget achieves not a 1st person perspective but a 1.20 person perspective: a perspective that gives him just enough mental space or headroom to notice details about the look and feel of a game that players caught up in the action would likely miss.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">Having gained insights from this 1.20 perspective, Roget can then create imaginative musical layers and backdrops that illuminate and enrich details that would be otherwise missed, so improving the overall quality of a game and enhancing game players' enjoyment.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">We can all gain from using perspective 1.20. When seeking to solve a problem, do your best to experience it from the perspectives of those people affected by it. Whilst doing so, however, ensure you do not become too involved and caught up in a problem and its effects. Give yourself just enough mental space to begin noticing details about the look, feel and context of a problem: details that those caught within a problem's web of consequences would likely fail to see.Charles M Lineshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07837223763698429139noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5828374571954737412.post-13488664270561017322020-04-15T07:04:00.000-07:002020-04-15T07:04:32.259-07:00Throw it at the audience, warts and all! <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">"Throw it at the audience: warts and all!"
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Daniel Kessner
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">This quotation is taken from Daniel Kessner's programme note for a piece called "Nuance", a duet he wrote for bass flute and viola.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">Presenting or changing ideas in slightly different ways can achieve two closely associated things: it can help us perceive ideas in different ways, and it can help us improve ideas in surprising ways.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">If you have edited photographs using Instagram filters or similar, you will have experienced the above at first hand: as you apply each filter to the photograph, some aspects are emphasised or enhanced and new aspects are revealed. Then, after you have selected a filter and begun editing the photograph's colour, brightness and contrast, etc., you discover that the slightest movement of your finger can bring forth additional and sometimes surprising nuances of shade, light and emphasis, some of which transform an average photograph into a good one and a good photograph into a great one.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">Find slightly different ways to present or change your idea: change one or two of the words and phrases you use to describe it; slightly strengthen or soften the emphasise you give to different aspects of it; listen to it being presented by someone else, at one remove; add one <span style="font-family: "arial";">or two small aspects to it, or take one or two away; slightly change the context within which it is framed.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The audience laughed and hissed and departed in droves during the performance. When the symphony sounded its last notes, the orchestral players (who had never liked the work) immediately bolted for the exits.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Bruckner, who had conducted the symphony, was left alone on his podium to receive a battering of catcalls and sarcastic cries for encores.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">He was so traumatised by his experience that a whole year passed before he could resume composing.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">But the 3rd Symphony's premier was not the total disaster it had at first seemed. This was because it caused the following three things to happen:

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Bruckner gained a 1st champion for his symphony: a music publisher, Theodore Rattig, offered to publish the symphony and a four-hand piano transcription of it.

<span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";">A seventeen year old music student was greatly impressed and influenced by the symphony: his name was Gustav Mahler. Some years later, he gained ownership of the symphony's handwritten score.

<span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";">The history of the symphony, the symphony's influence upon Mahler and the ownership journey of the symphony's handwritten score (Mahler's widow inherited the manuscript and smuggled it out of Germany to ensure the Nazis could not use a valuable musical artefact to bolster their cause) all contributed to a story that inspired many people.

<span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";">When you premier a new idea, when you share it with people for the first time, remember that initial negative impressions of people's reactions can be deceiving: a 1st champion may make herself known above the catcalls; a seed of inspiration may have been planted within an open, creative and gifted mind; the story of your idea's emergence and subsequent journey within minds and beside lives may reach out to and inspire more people than you initially imagined.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">(And today, of course, Bruckner's 3rd Symphony has taken its place amongst the established symphonic repertoire.) Charles M Lineshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07837223763698429139noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5828374571954737412.post-13512344758125878442020-01-08T06:55:00.000-08:002020-01-08T07:10:37.503-08:00 Create a universe of imagination from a tiny spark of feeling

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">During a lunch with the violinist Samuel Dushkin, the composer Igor Stravinsky wrote some musical notes on a napkin. These notes formed the following vertical stack (or chord) of notes:
<span style="font-family: "arial";">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Stravinsky passed the napkin to Samuel and asked him if the chord was playable on the violin.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Given the awkward look of the chord and the significant space between its notes, Samuel immediately said that the chord was unplayable; he thought it would, quite literally, be too much of a stretch.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">On returning home, however, Samuel tried playing the chord on his violin. To his surprise, he found that the chord was quite easy to play.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">He immediately telephoned Stravinsky to tell him the good news. Stravinsky was pleased; he said the chord would be "the passport" to the concerto he was going to write for Dushkin.
<span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">Stravinsky was not a violinist and had, until finding the above passport to compositional success, been reluctant to write a concerto for the instrument. He had assumed that his lack of familiarity with the violin would hamper his efforts and cause him to create a mediocre concerto.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">However, as his fellow composer Paul Hindemith had suggested, Stravinsky's unfamiliarity with the violin proved to be an advantage, enabling him to write for the violin in fresh and surprising ways: ways that expert violinists may have dismissed as unplayable or "unviolinistic".
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">The chord that had at first seemed unplayable to a virtuoso violinist became the symbolic and generative core of Stravinsky's innovative and engaging violin concerto. Each of the concerto's movements<span style="font-family: "arial";">, and some of the sections within the movements, start with the chord.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">The chord became the creative gateway through which Stravinsky was able to access and explore, what was for him, a new and exciting musical landscape.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";">The above example offers us two important lessons about creative problem solving. Firstly, being unfamiliar with a discipline, issue or problem can be an advantage: it can lead to a person exploring things in new ways and discovering new approaches and solutions. Secondly, being familiar with a discipline, issue or problem can (at least initially) be a disadvantage: it can stop a person exploring things in new ways and discovering new approaches and solutions.
<span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";">Stravinsky, despite his initial misgiving about writing for the violin, heeded the advice of Paul Hindemith and transformed the apparent disadvantage of unfamiliarity into a creative strength. Samuel Dushkin tested his familiarity based initial assumptions and discovered they were wrong (and in the process he gained a masterpiece for the violin).
<span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Delivering the piano to Beethoven was expensive, time consuming and arduous. It
<span style="font-family: "arial";">When he realised he was wrong, the child was hugely disappointed.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">When the child grew up, however, he found a handheld tool that could conjure music from nowhere: a pen.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">The child's name was Moisey Weinberg, and he grew up to become a composer.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">Children are open to the wonder of magic, and they make magically imaginative mistakes when trying to understand the world's sounds and sights.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">Thankfully, the young Weinberg cherished his childhood memory. He did not dismiss it as naïve, wrong and useless. As a result, a wand conjuring-up music became a catalyst igniting Weinberg's musical creativity.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">Moisey Weinberg's magically imaginative mistake struck a chord that reverberated deep within his mind throughout his life, calling him towards the task of composing: of conjuring music from nowhere.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">Do not carelessly dismiss naïve and childlike thoughts. Allow them to reverberate in your mind. Recognise that they may be magically imaginative mistakes: mistakes that can give you unique insights; mistakes that can motivate you to achieve new, innovative and worthwhile things.
This meaning can be physical, abstract, or emotional: e.g., ragged, jagged music for words describing uneven ground; fluttering, shimmering music for words describing angels and heaven; yearning, sighing music for words describing love.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Baroque composer Handel did a lot of word painting, and today's songwriters still do it. (Here are some examples of Handel's word painting, and this Wikipedia page not only explores Handel's word painting but also provides examples from contemporary songs.)
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Musical word painting increases the impact words and phrases have upon listeners; it makes words and phrases stimulating and enjoyable to hear; it makes meanings memorable.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">The best musical word painters, as the above Wikipedia page clearly shows, are some of the most successful and popular of musicians: their music is fondly remembered and sought-after by concert-goers.
<span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";"><span style="font-family: "arial";">We can all benefit from the principle underpinning musical word painting; we can all make our words and phrases stimulating and memorable by incorporating them into rich and colourful pictures.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">Some people have ridiculed the use of musical word painting, calling it (among other unflattering things) childish and naïve. These ridiculers have included composers. For example, Thomas Campion (a renaissance song writer) said that "<span style="font-family: "times new roman";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">where the nature of <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">everie word is precisely expressed in the Note… such childish observing of words is altogether ridiculous".
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">The reasons for this ridicule can be personal, social and cultural. Perhaps a person has stoical values that eschew making dramatic gestures and expressing emotions. Perhaps a person lives within a society that is similarly stoical: which seeks to hide overt gesture and emotion beneath a cultural blanket of withering admonishments.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">Music, like most things, suffers as a result of ridicule; it becomes a barely heard and distorted echo of what it could be.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">Do not allow your words to suffer in a similar way. Do not allow them to become a faintly heard whisper of what you wanted to express. Do not allow ridicule to fade your words to grey.
When I heard the title, I immediately assumed the piece was a set of musical variations in the traditional sense (i.e., a number of movements or sections that are derived from an initial melody, each of which develops the melody in different and creative ways).
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">When I listened to the composer talk about her piece, however, I realised my assumption was incorrect. Outi Tarkiainen said that her piece was not a set of variations in the above traditional sense; instead, it was a musical depiction of the ever-changing light that plays upon the tundra and dense forests of the Northern Finnish landscape during late summer: a time when midnight sun slowly gives way to darkness.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">This change of meaning immediately altered my perception and expectations of Outi Tarkiainen's piece, which made me listen to and appreciate the music in a new and refreshing way.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">Because of our education, training and experiences, etc., some words and phrases have specific meanings for us: meanings that have become hardwired into our way of thinking about and perceiving things (as illustrated by my assumption about the meaning of the word "variations", which my musical education had embedded into my mind).
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">The next time someone describes a problem to you, check out your assumptions about the way it is being described. What do the words used to describe the problem mean to the person saying them? How does this meaning differ from the one you were assuming? Does this different meaning alter the way you perceive the problem? Does this new perception of the problem suggest new ways to address the problem? Charles M Lineshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07837223763698429139noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5828374571954737412.post-8132783415055765652019-08-02T09:46:00.001-07:002019-10-13T10:28:12.363-07:00Share your encore

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">After performing a concerto at a concert, and taking several bows in recognition of the audience's applause and acclaim, a soloist will often play an encore.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is a short piece played in recognition of the audience's appreciation. It will in some way contrast with or complement the concerto previously performed and also provide an additional opportunity for the soloist to show off his or her musical skills, be this fast-fingered passage work or the ability to express the beauty of a simple melody.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Traditionally, the encore has kept the spotlight on the soloist. Recently, however, soloists have begun to share the spotlight with others. This happened during a 2019 Promenade Concert. Joshua Bell had performed the Dvorak Violin Concerto. As an encore, he joined two players from the orchestra to perform another piece by Dvorak: a movement from the Cavatina for Two Violins and Viola.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Apart from providing novelty, which the audience enjoyed, this encore achieved three other things:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It demonstrated Joshua Bell's willingness to share the spotlight with others.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It publicly acknowledged the skills of the orchestra and their contribution to the successful performance of the Dvorak Concerto. (The second violin player was the leader of the orchestra; this symbolism would have been appreciated by audience and orchestra alike.)

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It shone a spotlight on a section of the orchestra that almost always plays a supporting part: the violas.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We can all benefit from adopting and adapting Joshua Bell's encore approach. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Make sure those who support your achievements are able to share the spotlight of your recognition. Focus especially upon those who usually play supportive parts in the background. Offer your supporters meaningful roles in follow-up and "spin-off" projects and events. When you are invited to make presentations about your achievements, ensure your supporters are given the opportunity to speak about how they helped you. When you are asked to write about your achievements, do not only acknowledge the help you received but also include descriptions of how the skills and expertise of your supporters were essential to success. When awards are given to you, find ways to ensure your helpers and supporters receive their share of the acclaim.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">By doing the above, you will demonstrate your generosity and willingness to acknowledge the expertise and contributions of others.

People will remember how you shared your encore; they will remember your generosity and willingness to share the spotlight.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">And the next time you need help, it will be willingly given.Charles M Lineshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07837223763698429139noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5828374571954737412.post-61885745511113949752019-07-17T08:48:00.005-07:002019-07-19T07:14:42.602-07:00Quicken <span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">Also, composers will often gradually quicken their music until it reaches a climax. This adds a feeling of anticipation that increases audiences' excitement: Grieg’s In the Hall of the Mountain King from his Peer Gynt Suite is a popular example. If you want to achieve a similar effect within your own context, create a series of deadlines where the amount of time between each one is slightly but also significantly reduced (e.g., 10 days, 8 days, 6 days, 5 days, 4 days, 3 days, 2 days, 1 day...). The sense of ever more quickly working towards a climax or launch date will encourage excitement and stimulate thinking and action.Charles M Lineshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07837223763698429139noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5828374571954737412.post-68721828852161885972019-07-08T12:23:00.000-07:002019-07-09T05:24:49.115-07:00Do the everyday hard graft<span style="font-family: "arial";">When I studied music, my main focus was composing. <span style="font-family: "arial";">Unsurprisingly, copying became an important part of my compositional process; seeing the notes forming and intertwining as I copied them provided me with a strong sense of how each note and phrase rubbed along and interacted with another.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It is well known that Beethoven
was a musical revolutionary. The size and loudness of his 3rd Symphony,
"The Eroica", challenged the accepted musical conventions of his time and
provided the foundations upon which later composers would build; the epic, all
embracing symphonies of the Romantic and Late Romantic periods of music (epitomised by
Bruckner and Mahler respectively) would not have been possible without the inspirational impetus
provided by Beethoven.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">But Beethoven was
also revolutionary in subtle and quiet ways.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For example, Beethoven would sometimes start his concertos (pieces for soloist and orchestra) quietly, introducing the soloist in an understated and reflective way: his 4th Piano Concerto begins quietly, introducing the soloist not with a virtuosic flourish but with a reflective prayerlike meditation.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This quietness broke the musical conventions of the time: most contemporaries of Beethoven
would start their concertos with a loud flourish and provide solo parts that were written to show off the brilliant virtuosic skills of the soloist.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The subtly revolutionary act of starting quietly immediately freed
the music from the shackles of virtuosic "display for display's sake" and enabled Beethoven to add emotional depth to his concertos,
elevating them to a place beside his symphonies in terms of their ability to express profound feelings.
the end of Alban Berg's Violin Concerto (written in 1935) a German Lutheran hymn (written in 1662) is combined with a counter-melody that is very chromatic and modern sounding. The mixing of these two very different melodies creates a magical,
almost mystical experience for the listener.
the old and the new can often create something that is very innovative: the boat and aeroplane were combined to create

It was a comic depiction of the four temperaments, or personality types, that ancient philosophers believed determined human behaviour: choleric (ambitious and leader-like), phlegmatic (relaxed and quiet), melancholic (introverted and thoughtful) and sanguine (pleasure seeking and social).
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The painting was so extreme in its caricature of the temperaments that it made Nielsen laugh loudly. Choleric, for example, was depicted by a man on horseback who was violently waving a sword; his eyes bulged out of their sockets and his face was impossibly distorted by rage.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Despite Nielsen's initial reaction, or more likely because of it, the painting stuck in his mind. He became increasingly fascinated by the theory of the temperaments. Eventually, this fascination inspired him to compose his 2nd Symphony "The Four Temperaments".
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Each movement of this symphony thoroughly explores one of the temperaments; an extensive and complex piece of music had grown from a seed of an idea planted within the composer's mind by a comical painting (and the laughter it had caused).
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">Things we initially perceive as silly, comic or absurd; things we greet with disbelief and laughter: these things can often prove of immense value. If we resist dismissing them from our minds and instead reflect upon them for a while, if we ponder their meaning, they will likely offer us unexpected insights and inspiration.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">Ernest Duchesne, a French military doctor, noticed (with some amusement) that stable boys were storing leather saddles in the most absurd of places: a dank, dark room. Duchesne's amusement, however, was soon followed by curiosity. Why were the stable boys doing such a silly thing? The answer to Duchesne's question revealed method in the stable boys' apparent madness: they had discovered that encouraging mould to grow on saddles helped prevent infection of horses' saddle sores.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">Ernest Duchesne and the stable boys had discovered the antibiotic properties of moulds, and they had done this 32 years before Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin (an antibiotic produced by these moulds).
They did not have much money with which to help Eduard, but they did have cows; when a piano became available within the village, they swapped one of their herd for it. This was not an easy decision to make: the cow helped sustain the family's everyday existence.

Eduard loved his piano and was soon giving performances to the local villagers. Over the next few years, his musical abilities grew and his reputation spread. At the age of 15, he won a place at music college. This was the beginning of a long musical career that brought forth ten symphonies and many other significant works. Eduard's parents must have been very pleased with the return on their investment, which had far exceeded the immediate benefits of cow ownership.

Often, to achieve our potential (or the potential of our ideas) we must swap something of obvious and immediate value for something that is not: something that is an investment in a possible future we would like to see become reality. This requires us to take a leap of faith that may expose us to ridicule; many of the Tubin family's neighbours probably thought it at best ill-advised and at worst stupid to lose the prize asset of a family cow.

What is valuable to you now and are you willing to swap it for something that will help you attain the future you desire? Do you have the courage to make the imaginative, risky and future-orientated decision?

Are you willing to stand apart from the herd and endure some bellows of ridicule in return for possible future benefits?Charles M Lineshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07837223763698429139noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5828374571954737412.post-11846086742472014062019-03-26T07:23:00.002-07:002019-03-26T07:55:40.692-07:00Know your audience<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Anton Dvorak
was acclaimed during his lifetime as a great and popular composer. This success was in no small part due his preparation and approach to composing: he would
identify the music his audiences liked, explore the traditional music
of the towns and regions where his music was to be
performed, and ensure he weaved his insights into his compositions.
Being aware of the context within which ideas and inventions will be introduced increases their chances of success.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A good
example of an invention that did not take account of context was the Sinclair C5, a very small single-seat electric car that positioned the driver low down
towards the road surface and provided no protection from the often inclement British
weather. Unsurprisingly, the C5 failed to catch on; it was an uncomfortable (and
sometimes very damp) way to travel and, most importantly, lorries drivers had trouble
seeing it because it was small and low to the ground.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">An
example of an invention that did take account of context was the clockwork radio. This was created with the needs
of isolated African communities in mind. <span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">These communities had very little
or no access to affordable electricity. As a consequence, it was very difficult for these communities to keep abreast of their regions' and countries' news and current affairs. Most importantly, they often did not receive information that was vital to their survival. Within this context, a radio that used an alternative and easily
maintained power source was likely to become very popular and successful.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif";"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When
identifying new and innovative solutions to problems, put significant effort
into researching the context within which they will be implemented. This
will increase the likelihood of your ideas becoming valuable additions to people’s
lives (rather than irrelevant eccentricities relegated to obscure footnotes
within the annals of failed solutions).
